Saudi Arabia requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all travellers from Nigeria. Without the physical yellow card (International Certificate of Vaccination), you will be denied boarding or entry. This is a physical document — carry the original.

From experience supporting hundreds of pilgrims every year, these are the things that make the biggest difference.

Change into Ihram on the plane, not at the airport. For men, dressing in Ihram at King Abdulaziz Airport means joining a queue of thousands in a crowded terminal. Change in the aircraft toilet once the pilot announces the Miqat — you'll arrive composed, not flustered.

Do not bring Zamzam water from home. Zamzam is freely available throughout the Haramain — at both mosques, at your hotel, and in shops everywhere. Every extra kilogram you carry to Saudi Arabia is weight you could save for Zamzam to bring home.

Carry two printed copies of every document. Keep one set on your person and a separate set in a different bag. A lost passport is manageable; a lost passport with no copy is a very difficult situation to resolve from abroad.

Label everything clearly. Write your full name, group name, and a contact phone number on every bag, shoe bag, and personal item. The crowds at the Haram are unlike anything most pilgrims have experienced — items are lost every day.

Unscented is non-negotiable during Ihram. Pack your regular scented products in a separate clearly labelled bag and use them only outside the state of Ihram. Many experienced pilgrims keep two separate toiletry pouches — one for Ihram use, one for normal use.

Your shoes matter more than almost anything else you pack. You will walk distances in a week that most people cover in a month. Bring well-worn, broken-in shoes — never new ones. Blisters in Makkah are painful, preventable, and a real risk to completing your rites comfortably.

Drink far more water than you think you need. The combination of heat, long walks, and exertion creates serious dehydration risk. Oral rehydration sachets are significantly more effective than water alone once you're already behind on fluids.

Keep your phone charged at all times. Navigation between sites, communicating with your group, and accessing digital guides and dua apps drain battery fast. A power bank with at least 10,000 mAh capacity is worth the weight.
